The path starts off on the famous GR 54 path (Tour de l’Oisans), and then climbs up steadily to pass the Anna Falque’s step, named so after the legend of a young girl who went down for dancing in Villar and failed to return after an unfortunate encounter with the devil…
Here is the start of the Villar d’Arène mountain pasture, called « Plan de l’Alpe », where flocks of cows come to graze every summer. The refuge enjoys an unrestricted view on Les Agneaux, the Pic de Chamoissière or the Col d’Arsine.
The start is also possible from the Col du Lautaret, on the track called « Sentier des crevasses », a sometimes vertiginous path sculpted out of the schist rocks face, accompanied with ecology information signs.
From this path, the view over La Meije and its glaciers is magnificent!
From left to right: the Pointe Nérot (3538m), on which the Glacier du Fauteuil is suspended, the Pic Gaspard (3881m), the Glacier du Lautaret in the middle, La Meije (the Pic Oriental, 3891m, the Doigt de Dieu, 3973m, and the Grand Pic, 3982m), the Glacier de l’Homme and the Trois Hommes (2933m).
Third path starts on Casset hamlet (Monétier mes Bains). Go through the col d’Arsine then down to the refuge. GR 54 path (white and red painting) 3 hours.
A word of the hut keeper
If the paradise exists, the mountain pasture of Villar d’Arène is one for children! A small stream, a few boulders, grassy slopes and the whole space needed to run and have fun. Nearby, hens scratch around for grass and insects. From its enclosure, a few meters away, the pack donkey surveys the scene with his soft eyes.
